Playful, contemporary extension & renovation in Brockley, SE London, supports young family's mental & physical wellbeing with innovative design.

A unique feature of the Wellstudio design is the incorporation of a home-working space looking out onto the internal double height atrium which links it to the ground floor kitchen & main staircase of the house creating a 'hub of the home' which promotes connection & family togetherness. Other features include plentiful natural light, connection to nature through the rooflights and sliding doors which provide views of the sky and garden, natural materials including the cork floor, indoor plants, good levels of acoustic & thermal insulation providing warmth, comfort & sustainability. This project incorporates Wellstudio's unique Seven Elements of Wellbeing Design in the following ways: Light> Natural light has been maximised through incorporating 5 rooflights into the rear extension, a lightwell/atrium and large wide 2.4m high glazed sliding doors Air> Natural ventilation, both stack, purge and cross, are incorporated through the mechanically operated roof lights and sliding doors which minimise energy use Sound> There is good acoustic separation between GF kitchen/dining/living spaces and bedroom areas at the same time as visual connection by means of internal glazed windows and doors to the stairwell Warmth> The incorporation of 140mm insulated cavities, Underfloor heating and a design for P.V. panels to be incorporated to make this house warm and low energy. Touch>Materials such as natural rubber, timber & stone have been incorporated to facilitate wellbeing and connection to nature. Togetherness>A double height atrium which connects the home-working space and stairwell to the GF kitchen dining & living spaces incorporated to facilitate family togetherness Nature> Garden facing glazed doors, sky facing rooflights, natural materials, outdoor & indoor planting connect family to nature.
