Defoe Road
Defoe Road is an extension and full refurbishment of a North London home inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and the beauty of natural oak.
The project revitalises a Victorian terraced house, expertly merging traditional and modern design while making a significant impact with a very small additional footprint of under 3sqm. Featuring a warm palette of oak and green metal accents, the sensitive development honours the home’s original character whilst reimagining its layout around the careful arrangement of small living spaces. Moving through the home, additions to the existing house are defined, with large windows framing the conservatory-style extension articulated with a green circular skylight punched through the ceiling overhead, providing a perfect place for their client to work from home or contemplate the garden beyond. To achieve the seamless feel of the space, the majority of the storage and seating areas were designed bespoke to fit perfectly into their defined locations. The dining area that sits in the middle of the new extension is an example of this conscientious approach to design, where a recessed window seat is framed in oak, creating a calming and bright space to socialise with friends and family alike. The aesthetics of the new extension have been carried through to the rest of the house, which has been refurbished using a similar colour and material palette. Natural oak flooring has been installed throughout, aside from the first floor bathroom, which is clad in sage tiles echoing the green windows on the ground floor. By overcoming financial and spatial challenges through creativity and collaboration, the project showcases a successful partnership between clients and contractors, resulting in a cost-effective, warm and inviting home.
