Studio House
Studio House has a special interior hidden in a modest exterior blending within context.
Phase 1 of a redevelopment creating three high-quality homes, modestly addressing London’s housing shortage by optimising a former garage area with mews access. The 37m² plan follows the irregular site boundary, forming two offset rectangles with a skylit core Living/Sleeping area. Multi-faceted roof massing, shaped by daylight modelling, prevents light loss to neighbours while enhancing internal volume. Conceived as a top-lit wooden box, the timber-structured home features reclaimed oak finishes, oak wainscot panelling, and a widened sleeping alcove with integrated shelving. Kitchen, utility, and storage are streamlined for efficiency, with a bay window extending the stainless-steel counter. Heated/cooled by an air-source heat pump, the super-insulated, all-electric home will include photovoltaics. A raised floor level ensures flood protection, with step-free mews access. In collaboration with Southwark, Studio House is phase 1 of a car-free redevelopment that will include two additional 3-bedroom homes. The private client, not a developer, unlocked the site’s potential by purchasing 21m² of previously unusable land.
