The client asked for the extension to be modern and with clean lines and to be inspired by Mondrian and Hockney artworks.

After exhaustively exploring ways to keep the side wall low and clear of neighbours' views we followed a cranked skylight option. Hence the cris
se of colour and straight dynamic lines running through the extension. The open plan layout of the kitchen, to dining, to seating areas is cleanly arranged so units are simply on one side with a kitchen counter. On the other side there is a counter that sits below the sloped and flat glass roof/skylight above. This glass skylight is set at a height that allow
ccess from the location of the existing window opening (which will be lowered to floor level) below and accessed via the whole rear wall which is removed on upper floor. This skylight that is flat on top and sloped to a height on the side, that doesn’t impinge on next doors sight line- continues to the rear wall, where it shall abut a fixed vertical glass panel set within two brick piers. The rear façade is comprised of this fixed glass panel and thre
rick piers, either side of the fixed glass panel and either side of the folding glass doors on the other side. A gutter runs the length of the boundary wall and sits in the wall- it continues at a low level and abuts a “false” parapet, located at the end of the sloped glass roof and gutter- from which a hopper takes the rwp- which set against the 900mm pier. This pier needs to be wide enough for the work counter to be book ended internally and a hose pipe and electric socket and light to be located externally.
