Tower House has a stunning cliff-top location on the Suffolk coast, providing a studio and additional living accommodation without needing to extend the existing Grade II listed dwelling

As coastal erosion may eventually require relocating the ‘kit’ house, longshore drift activity threatens the headland and properties along the coast. The studio was manufactured off-site within 25 miles by a local carpenter and construction company, using locally sourced timber for the frame and charred cladding. This ensured high-quality craftsmanship, reduced wastage, and minimized the project’s carbon footprint. Reflecting the ethos of the main Grade II listed ‘kit’ house, the new building is lightweight and movable, allowing for potential relocation along with the disassembled main house. Its simple timber construction and adaptable layout ensure flexibility for future needs. The studio features a bed space, shower room, kitchen, and living area, with a large glazed gable offering views over the North Sea. Its compact yet efficient open-plan layout and open eaves create a generous internal volume. Positioned separately but accessible from the main house, the studio maximizes outlook while maintaining privacy. Its simple form and contemporary design meet the client’s brief for a minimal aesthetic that complements but does not imitate the main property, while its materiality and detailing respond to the exposed coastal weather conditions.
