The project includes a new single-storey rear extension and ground floor remodelling to enhance spaces for modern living.
All windows were replaced and an enlarged first-floor rear window was designed to contemplate the new sedum roof, a contribution to biodiversity and wildlife. The original ground floor was compartmentalised into small spaces that were not big enough for the family to be together. With the proposal, all the required components are pushed to the perimeter, to maximise usable floor space and make room for its occupants to live and play. The existing wc is relocated under the stair to allow a new side access and more light into the centre of the ground floor with a new glazed door. A vertical oak slats volume intends to visually extend the ceiling height whilst concealing the stair and doors to the guest wc and storage. The kitchen was designed for an efficient use of the space available and carefully detailed to look more like a piece of joinery rather than a kitchen. The materials palette and the choice for natural and warm tones intends to provide comfort to its occupants. Pale and neutral colours and natural timber create a calm setting to contribute to the family’s wellbeing. The new rear extension with generous sliding doors and oriel window framing the fig tree improves the visibility and access to the rear garden, brings more natural light into the house and provides the additional area required to create an open plan social space - encompassing kitchen, dining and living. Its slightly glazed brick facade design intends to create a sculptural piece that adds design interest to a late 90s functional house. The brick outer layer is shaped around the new openings, to justify their placement.
