Friendly Street

The design required a delicate balance respecting the existing dwelling, whilst conserving the characteristics of the area and providing new contemporary spaces appropriate for a client who enjoys entertaining. The design considers the context on several levels: the terrace; the mirrored pair; and the individual dwelling. Doing so helped reveal rhythms that informed the genesis of the design. The brief called for high levels of privacy, direct engagement with the garden and light internal spaces. Playing with the archetypal pitched roof form results in a series of sculptural roof lights providing a direct connection with the sky and flooding the internal spaces with natural light. Two pitched roof forms hinging around the end ridge point, provide a dual-angled interface with the garden, elevating the internal spatial conversation and playing with the internal/external views.
