Located in the charming market town of Wetherby, this project has transformed the schools library into a captivating space for children.

In an era dominated by digital technology, how can we inspire children to embrace the joy of reading? The brief centred on creating a new space that would encourage readers to visit the library and discover new worlds through books; The brief evolved into a blueprint for a volumetric installation, creating opportunities for group reading or smaller, more intimate spaces - a reflection that stories can and should be experienced in a range of different ways. The library space formed part of the original Victorian schoolhouse, dating back to 1916. The project builds upon the best of the Victorian features, lofty ceilings and natural daylight, to create a design of multiple ‘levels’ designed for children. The installation wraps around the perimeter walls forming steps for sitting, climbing and additional storage. This design enhances the functionality of the space whilst paying homage to Wetherby's renowned Grade-II listed bridge, a cherished landmark in the heart of the town. Made predominantly from timber, the design was built and finished off-site in a custom joinery workshop with the new features assembled on-site in a matter of weeks during the summer holidays. The project was delivered during the context of teacher pay discussions; funding for the project was under significant budgetary pressure. Through a series of fund-raising drives by parents, teachers and the PTA the project was delivered for ~£20k through an open, collaborative approach with an insightful and creative contractor. The overwhelmingly positive response from students, teachers and parents alike is testament to the success of the project. We hope that it will inspire current and future generations of students to embrace the joy of reading and experience the transformative power of design.
