The site was a disused swimming pool building set in rural Warwickshire. The brief was to create a home for a single occupant with a close connection to the garden.

A large group of people could inhabit the space comfortably, but when the client is alone the house should not feel empty, with unneeded rooms behind closed doors. Feasibility studies suggested conversion of the pool building would be cheaper and less carbon intensive than rebuilding. The proposed scheme avoided demolition and improved the thermal efficiency of the existing building, whilst retaining an echo of the swimming pool character. The house is a collection of unenclosed interconnected spaces, under a continuous roof plane. It is entered from the garden onto what was the original poolside. A mezzanine is constructed over the structure of the existing pool, loosely defining areas in front, to the side, above and below. The volume, enclosure and natural light of each suggests a different use and way of inhabitation. In front, a bright double-height space acts as a kitchen and opens generously onto the garden. To the side, nestled in the corner beneath the eaves is a snug. Beneath, the more secluded space is for work and for staying guests. Above, a sense of security from being elevated, creates a comfortable sleeping area for the client, which has access to a bridge. Reminiscent of a diving board, the bridge leads to the uppermost window which enjoys views of the rural landscape. The retrofit measures utilised focused primarily on upgrading the existing fabric. The existing concrete pool floor, steel frame and external envelope were retained, internally insulated and made airtight. Triple glazed windows replaced existing units, with external shading on the western facade. Underfloor heating has been installed ready for subsequent installation of an air-source heat pump.
