The scheme sought to create the flexibility of a three-bedroom, two reception house within the extended footprint of an original small one bedroom flat, thus allowing our client to remain within their family home as they grow in size.

With a new ground floor wrap around extension, the arrangement was carefully considered to ensure the spaces are separate, unique to their own setting yet always borrowing from adjacent spaces where needed.

The use of colour was important to help give each space a minimal difference to the next with other finishes allowing it to subtly appear as a whole when required. Zoning was achieved through colour blocking such as the yellow of the kitchen island, whilst the retained chimney stack and re used fireplace helped form the dining area. The tall ceiling within the sitting area and fitted furniture given the impression of space and light within a small footprint.

Despite a limited budget thermal performance was an important part of the project. A minimal dig solution was proposed with only three small pad foundations cast with a steel frame forming the permitter off which a fully insulated timber frame could be constructed. This provided a thinner and more thermally efficient construction, maximising space, reducing the works and impact required and controlling the budget efficiently. Simple and available sawn or planned timber were selected for cladding with contrasting finishes externally, thus ensuring a contrast between the perimeter treatment and rear elevation.
