Our client uses a wheelchair and has specific health needs. In designing this accessible extension, of importance was our client’s ability to manoeuvre freely and to enjoy both his interior and exterior spaces.
To achieve this, our scheme removed an internal corner from the existing building and inserted a wedge-shaped extension into the courtyard which opened the internal space. Additionally, the scheme included a package of voice-operated smart home technology and a personalised kitchen tailored to our client’s needs.
The internal spatial arrangement of the bungalow was altered to remove wasted and restrictive space that was under-used. The kitchen and dining area were enlarged with a physical and visual connection to the living room. Several spaces were created that enable our client to select where to study and work, each unique area providing different vistas and lighting.
To retain the memory of the original building, we used a feature orange steel frame to represent elements of the former structure. The new addition is reflected via the creation of an exposed Douglas fir timber ceiling with a smart operated roof light. These details alter the perception of the area by framing zones of use - kitchen, dining and living room - without adding a physical division.
Within the courtyard, a landscaped garden has been formed which is wheelchair accessible via each external doorway. Hidden drainage, a raised level garden flush with bi-folding doorways, and the removal of steps and narrow pathways ensure our client can travel easily within and throughout his indoor and outdoor spaces.
We worked closely with MDC Landscapes to create a picturesque garden with flat, hard surfaces and planting beds specific to our client’s height of vision.
