A modest proposal to increase the living space of this 1940s house for a young family in East Finchley, London, has resulted in a serene space beneath a new pitched roof extension.
Lumin Architects has used a muted colour palette, with a kitchen finished in anthracite grey, navy blue, and wood, complementing the cement floor, creating contrast in space, playing with both minimal cool and warm natural tones.
Large sliding glazed doors inside and out bring light into the original part of the house and connect the house to the garden. The massing follows the existing pitched roof volume, making use of as much floor to ceiling height as possible.
The garden entrance is completely glazed and divided into three equally wide sections, with two sliding doors and a window seat to one side. A frameless skylight to the south creates a playful, dynamic light during different parts of the day, and different times of the year.
The feeling of a natural flow from interior to exterior spaces was important in the renovation of this home. The micro-cement flooring extends beyond the kitchen area into the garden to visually extend the space. The kitchen/dining area and the living room are divided by two equally-wide sliding Crittal doors on each end of the central supporting wall, making the physical connection of these spaces flexible while not compromising on the light in the living room.
The family's main living space has been dramatically increased with a new large ground-level kitchen and dining area, where the calm atmosphere of the house and the garden makes the inhabitants forget they're in the city.
