8 years ago, our clients purchased this historic building as a home for their growing family

Having its origins in the 1670’s, this house was gentrified into a Georgian townhouse around 1800, before being subdivided into 3 dwellings, which were later re-amalgamated into a family home. The successive alterations had given rise to a number of eccentricities that ranged from charming to plain awkward.

Entry was via the side of the house, leading the visitor through a small kitchen and then through a dark narrow passage to the front reception rooms. The large garden was divorced from the house by virtue of an abrupt level change and a lack of connecting view.

The proposed works significantly rearranged the back of the house to create a light filled volume forming a new kitchen and dining area. This new space has been reconnected to the main house by forming an enfilade of rooms from the street through to the garden. Internal levels have also been carefully managed to ameliorate the previous step up to the rear yard. While the overall changes are transformational spatially, the amount of demolition was very modest and reserved to a few twentieth century blockwork walls.

The interior finishes have been executed in softwood and board marked concrete, which have a dialogue with one another, and with the existing stonework. Externally, the rose-coloured zinc compliments the ‘broken’ tones of the surrounding local materials and the subtle variation from sheet to sheet lends the zinc a softness.

The new fabric is super insulated with heat trickled in by means of underfloor heating. In summer, the massive concrete floor and the opening glazing, including the venting kitchen rooflight, will minimize overheating.
