A self-build timber-framed office for a sole practitioner built as weekend 'therapy' during a stressful major restoration project and subsequently proving to be the perfect working environment during both the down-sizing of the practice and the current pa

The SHoffice is located in the back garden of a detached estate house built in the early days of Milton Keynes Development Corporation to a design by Frost Nicholls and involved both the construction of a new boundary garden wall as well as providing both office/studio space and garden storage.

Existing access and orientation allowed the development of a scheme that benefits from large areas of glare-free NE facing glazing, a SW facing monopitch platform for solar panels and close integration with established fruit trees which give extra summer shading and greater discretion when viewed from the totally glazed rear elevation that is a prominent feature of the original excellent design of the house.

The project includes high levels of insulation using Sapisol panels for the roof, walls and floor, PV panels as a rain-shield roof covering, rainwater harvesting for garden irrigation and excludes the use of concrete by employing screw piles as foundations for the suspended timber frame.

The building was started in 2017 and continues through additions and refinement as an on-going project based on the use of semi-skilled labour and commonly available materials.

Annual CO2 emissions data was not provided.
