Situated in the idyllic village of Broughton, this once unassuming country cottage has been transformed into a bright, modern family home

Having been offered the chance to purchase the small cottage to the front of their site, the clients immediately saw the opportunity to enhance their own home by integrating the two modest dwellings via a small external courtyard.

A two-storey timber-clad extension to the side of the house provides a contemporary interpretation of the current built form, clad in dark-stained timber battens and providing a new master bedroom suite with its own private stair. A small study to the rear of the new extension opens out onto the existing wildflower garden and patio, with beautifully crafted bespoke joinery creating a space that is both comfortable and functional.

The cottage has been similarly transformed to create a bright and airy annex to the property, with its own kitchen, lounge and bedroom suite. The existing internal well has been revealed with clever lighting, to become a key feature of the revised scheme. The real success of the proposal however is the way in which these spaces have been designed to fit together, with views centred around the connecting courtyard and large openings blurring the line between inside and out. The resulting property is bright and welcoming, whilst still retaining that cosy cottage feel which was so central to its original character.
