The replacement of a conservatory in Norfolk.

The simplicity of the plain brick T-shaped detached house had been masked by a flat-roofed infill and wrap-around single storey extensions; the latter stole light from the centre of the house.

The client expressed a wish to remedy the damp in the utility spaces and replace the conservatory, which they felt created an unattractive profile, especially when viewed from the road.

In adding a pitched roof to the infill, a strong dynamic of gable ends was established. When that dynamic was applied to the footprint of the reordered east areas, the high and low points sat well with the existing windows and avoided a clumsy shallow pitched roof configuration.

“When we first saw the architect's interpretation of our wishes, it was love at first sight. Way outside our own expectations of what could be done, to us it was quite radical. Now that we have lived in it for 18 months we have no regrets whatsoever with our decision to go with the design. We love how it always feels as though we are eating ‘al fresco’ whatever the weather. In the early morning sunshine in summer it is a delight to sit on the multipurpose porch area for breakfast or maybe enjoy coffee later on. Despite facing east and south, the enlarged room area is never too hot thanks to the three large bifold windows and the high vaulted ceilings. We spend most of our day in here enjoying the view of the garden and the space to read, work and eat as a family. Looking at the alteration from the outside, as our neighbours do, we have to say it does look really good!'
