Office

Curtain Road is located in London’s City fringe, between the City’s corporate expansion and the creative centre of Shoreditch. The existing building accommodates incubator units and studio workspace for SME’s. The project is the re-use and reimagining of the communal spaces within a Victorian Warehouse, creating a Shoreditch-facing building that celebrates the process of making and craft.
The reception has been remade using a modular system of panelling that unifies a previously disjointed space, creating a legible entrance sequence. The system of repetitive components is inherently flexible, accommodating variations for seating, post boxes and service risers. The design and fabrication of the wall panels was conceived with a ‘construction as manufacturing’ approach. The existing space was 3D scanned with all of the new components tested virtually in 3D prior to CNC fabrication. This method allowed design issues to be resolved prior to manufacturing and facilitated rapid installation – particularly crucial in this instance, since the building was in full operation during the works.
The design utilises standard sized ply sheeting at optimal spacings to reduce waste and cost. The detailing is honest, expressing the process of its making. A bespoke lighting system was created with a series of interweaving feeds and lights forming a dramatic repeating pattern. Again, the system was modelled in 3D, prior to fabrication to eliminate any design issues prior to manufacture
The project has transformed the feel of the building and is the catalyst for further works to the building that will support the creative industries within Shoreditch.
