An extension to a townhouse in North London

The Ormond Road townhouse was purchased with the clients having fallen in love with the extensive east/west views of north London from its hidden roof terrace. A proposed first and second floor rear extension has been delivered to enhance these views while creating a series of bright and comfortable spaces.

Emulating the piecemeal stepped extensions of a neighbouring property, Mulroy Architects has extended the house over three floors, utilising clever glazing solutions to orientate the rooms towards long views of the lush green gardens adjacent. This ‘wedding cake’ of extensions provide additional space for playing, sleeping and bathing, all without the need to sacrifice the roof terrace.

The first floor extension does not extend further than the existing rear of the house at ground level. In addition, it sits back from the existing first floor extension by a minimum 500mm. A projecting window has improved the apparent width of the bedroom with only minimal impact on the overall mass of the extension. The projecting window is blacked out to its main face to avoid overlooking the neighbouring gardens and incorporates two clear slot sections at either end to provide light and framed views of the garden. Internally, the main panel will be mirrored to increase the apparent width of the room.

Finally, a subtle extension at roof level draws light down through the existing stairs and provides safe passage to the revitalised terrace, a space that the clients can finally enjoy as they had originally intended.
