The transformation of a large purpose-built semi-detached house on Queensmere Road in the London Borough of Wandsworth
The project aim was to transform the poorly-lit and inadequate living spaces into a spacious, beautiful and functional family home, full of light while providing much-needed additional living space.
This additional space took the form of an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space. It was also important to connect the external garden to the new internal structure, maximizing the living space.
The key move was the introduction of a new full-width, single-storey rear extension and involved removing a significant amount of existing masonry.
The introduction of large external openings in the new extension and the installation of openable rooflights provides the west-facing open-plan living space with natural light while improving the relationship between the internal and external spaces.
The extension is clad with weathering corten steel to ensure a contemporary aesthetic while being visually sensitive to the existing red brick masonry.
The front of the property remains largely unchanged, but step inside and the internal spaces are transformed with warmth, daylight and a clear connection to the rear garden.
