Construction of a new Archive Studio in the Royal Festival Hall for sorting and displaying sections of Southbank Centre's archive.
The new Southbank Centre Archive Studio occupies a corner of the Royal Festival Hall, adjacent to the Clore Ballroom. As you approach the Archive Studio you see the structure extend up into and fill the double height space.
The material palette speaks of the heritage nature of the building and the archive. Pegboard cladding is fixed to Dexion steel shelving with brass nuts. Four enamel tables sit in the centre of the space.
Shelving running up to the ceiling is filled with boxes of archive material, giving a sense of the vast scale of the archive, while unique objects are curated within glass cabinets built into the lower walls of shelving.
A moveable section on castors functions as both front door and mobile display cabinet, enabling the collection to inhabit other areas of the Festival Hall.
The Archive Studio allows Southbank Centre to explore, catalogue and arrange its collection, opening up elements of the archive to the public.
The Southbank Centre Archive Studio is part of a wider programme of refurbishment works to the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery.
