A449 LTD Edinburgh Architect_Portobello Refurbishment and Extension (2)
The conversion of a 1980’s stable into a three-bedroom family home within the conservation area of Portobello, Edinburgh
The existing building footprint was doubled to provide a flexible living space, bedroom and shower room on the ground floor, with two further bedrooms and bathroom on the first floor.
Externally the street facing boundary wall was carefully removed and the red bricks reused to form part of the outer skin of a highly insulated timber frame construction.
For the remainder of the extension the architects chose a material that referenced an old image we found of the original timber stable doors.
The decision to char the timber is loosely derived from the historical use of the site by a coal merchant, and was intended to contrast with the red brick.
Subtle insertions of matching timber elsewhere harmonises the principal elevation and allows the building to be read as a considered whole.
