Temporary installation at Clerkenwell Design Week 2014 sponsored by Turkishceramics
Tile Mile was a temporary installation at Clerkenwell Design Week 2014 that transformed the iconic Grade I-listed St John’s Gate into a kaleidoscope of infinite reflection.
In collaboration with Turkishceramics, the designers russ + henshaw used mirror on the inner arches and over 7,200 ceramic tiles on the floor below the arch to create a captivating optical illusion.
The parallel mirrors reflect both the double-vaulted medieval ceiling and the intricate floorscape, creating the illusion of a crypt like space with an endless tiled pathway extending beyond the mirrors and diminishing into the distance.
The design of the floor took inspiration from traditional Turkish and Iznic ceramics to create a contemporary interplay of colour and pattern.
By creating something fun and unique on a busy thoroughfare in the heart of Clerkenwell, the installation opened up the festival to the general public and local community.
