A small self-build pavilion designed for nature watching and stargazing located in the village of Stonehaugh, Northumberland

The Stonehaugh Stargazing Pavilion is a permanent design-build project delivered by 15 MArch students from Newcastle University.

Located in the small village of Stonehaugh, the pavilion was developed in partnership with Kielder Art and Architecture and the local community and it celebrates the recently acquired ‘Dark Sky’ status of the Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water and Forest Park.

The project sought to engage the village with contemporary architecture and the design for the pavilion was developed through a series of consultation and design events.

The community were also actively involved in the process of construction.

The form of the pavilion is generated from two offset circles that form a spiral route and orientation device. The outer circle creates a sheltered belvedere for nature watching; whilst the inner circle encloses an open courtyard with seating where groups of amateur stargazers can gather to view and discuss the night sky.
