Refurbishment and extension to a two storey 1960s house
The original square house, completed in 1964, was flanked by two single storey wings set at angles to it. While the central volume of the house has been retained the garage wing has been demolished and replaced with a two storey extension containing a kitchen and utility room on the ground floor and a master bedroom suite above.
At the back of the house a bedroom has been added over the existing living room. The stairs to this addition break through the curved wall of the living space and wrap around the existing conical chimney.
Internally original timber ceilings and joinery were rubbed back to bare timber and the original timber lining to the dining room was discovered under wallpaper and plywood facings.
The kitchen and utility room has been turned into a timber-lined library with 'secret' bookshelf door and the original 1960s tiling from the kitchen has been removed and re-used in the downstairs cloakroom.
In the original house the heating system of warm air ducts has been replaced with vertical radiators that drop from the ceiling - to avoid breaking up the solid ground floor. The additions are clad with a silicone render external insulation system and incorporate an underfloor heating system.
