Rear extension with a wrap of terracotta shingles and an expansive mono-pitch roof
The retired client held a keen interest in gardening. The house suffered from a lack of connection to the garden, with an adjoining extension negatively impacting on otherwise good orientation.
A wrap of terracotta shingles and insulation was added to the existing building. This sheath projects 2.5m beyond the footprint of the original return, enclosing a 4m2 garden room and bench. Its roof is canted to catch light above the adjoining extension, bathing the dark return in sunlight.
A window at the lower worktop level forms a space with a view of, rather then a route to the garden. It is a cul-de-sac from which to observe, enjoy a cup of tea or just watch the birds.
