Centre for Endemic, Emerging and Exotic Diseases, Hatfield, Hertfordshire by Architecture PLB
Research centre extension to the Royal Veterinary College’s existing facility
Students and researchers will be able to utilise the category 3 laboratories, open plan office spaces and attend seminars and lectures all under one roof, within a space that claims an existing stair core to open up the centre to interaction.
The building has a two-storey elevation of cedar boarding: laid vertically from the window sills up, horizontally below. The eaves conceal the extensive rooftop plant.
The two-directional use of timber plays on the surrounding character of the timber and corrugated barns. The use of materials aimed to create a feeling of a fresh new facility whilst in keeping with the rural campus feel of its context.
