Folly
Unobtrusive folly which would not be seen from the house and gardens.
Set within an overall tree preservation zone and deep within the green belt, our client wanted an unobtrusive folly which could not be seen from the house and gardens which could be used as a home office or retreat. The local authority initially would not support any new building, however we imagined a mirror cube reflecting the landscape and trees, elevated above the ground plane and supported on drilled piles avoiding tree roots, which gained approval and achieves the client’s desired outcome, fitting seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. The project measures only 18 square metres, and comprises a polished stainless steel external finish, a Bauder inverted intensive green roof and elevations made entirely of timber logs to encourage biodiversity, habitats for bugs and woodland creatures.
