As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations and moving into its new home in Hackney, the London School of Architecture (LSA) unveiled the Dalston Pavilion.
This self-initiated project temporarily transformed an underused Dalston car park into a vibrant public square, hosting a month-long design program for local youth as part of the LSA’s Part 0 outreach campaign. Designed by CITIZEN in collaboration with local communities and makers, the pavilion was built with partners like the New School of Furniture Making, Daniele Barco Works, and Rhodes Estate residents, with artwork by OllySTUDIO. Constructed from softwood cassettes and A-frames for easy assembly and disassembly, the structure is now stored for future use. In June 2024, it hosted 22 workshops and over 450 visitors, with support from RIBA, Open City, Rio Cinema, and others. A lasting legacy is an ongoing DIY course for female residents, strengthening local agency. The project was made possible by donations from the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation, the London Borough of Hackney, and industry sponsors.
