Sky Room
This project refurbished and extended a kitchen, dining area, and terrace in an upper floor De Beauvoir flat, replacing a dilapidated conservatory.
The space is conceived as a room in the sky - a delicate timber-lined lantern, perched high amongst the tree canopy and bathed in natural light. It is a place of solace, to carry out daily rituals and to observe the passing seasons. The concept of framing is used extensively throughout the project. Views, space, light, structure, and the functional organisation of a kitchen are all defined through a series of frames. This motif is also carried through to the interwoven lattice coffered ceiling that in turn delineates the roof light, the rhythm of the external vertical fins, and the window to the terrace. ‘Sky Room’ is articulated as a single piece of bespoke joinery. A celebration of junctions and interfaces, datums and textures.
