Refurbishment of dilapidated outbuilding to create a family retreat with gym, lounge, bar and store.

KJC were appointed by a private client, Shobhan Gajjar, to transform the existing outbuilding into a family retreat. The initial brief was to demolish the existing building and design a pre-fabricated structure to be placed on the same footprint to create an office space. However KJC advised the client that it may be more beneficial to utilise the existing structure with an internal refurbishment and new external cladding and roofing.

Instead of simply creating an office space, we created a bar area, gym, lounge, utility and shower room. By opening up one corner of the building, it links to the seating area on the terrace outside and back to the main house. There was an asbestos roof cladding with a badly damaged ceiling internally, the new scheme exposed the beautiful original metal truss system with a vaulted ceiling and the new warm deck roof is clad in EPDM.

The original walls were a precast concrete panel/post system which had minimal thermal performance, therefore the walls were insulated internally and a ventilated timber cedar cladding system was applied to the external facade.

The result is a multi-functional space that is now used for family gatherings, exercise classes, meetings and study.
