Hilly Fields is a unique whole house refurbishment with rear extension and loft conversion located within the Brockley Conservation Area and opposite Hilly Fields park.

The brief was to replace the existing outrigger with a full-width extension housing a new kitchen and social living/dining space while addressing the steep level change with the rear amenity space. The new ground floor extension is a bold statement, drawing inspiration from Scandinavian building form and materiality. A sensitive loft conversion repurposes the existing roof space into a master bedroom with an en-suite, avoiding a dormer structure. Internally, the extension is divided into two zones: the kitchen and social space. Soft, light tones with contrasting accent colours and joinery complement the kitchen, which features a central island. A feature up-and-over window brings natural daylight into the heart of the kitchen, while a full-length roof light above the social dining space and within the sloping green roof enhances brightness. Exposed Douglas Fir rafters create a ribbed ceiling effect, perceptively increasing volume and adding a tactile finish. Externally, Siberian Larch timber fins in a hit-and-miss arrangement follow the extension’s form, creating a warm contrast against the existing London Stock brick. A panel of Verde Guatemala Marble cladding complements the strip of vertical glazing, breaking up the timber façade as it returns around the side elevation. A sloping green roof softens the outlook from first-floor windows, enhances biodiversity, and improves surface water attenuation.
