The scheme reconnects a traditional terraced house with its garden by removing a previous ground-floor bedroom extension that had separated the principal living areas from the outdoor space.
It also consolidates the property, which had been divided following a historic conversion to flats. The design replaces the ground and first-floor outriggers with a vaulted, double-height kitchen and living space featuring gable-ended glazing. Externally, the extension is expressed as two primary volumes: the outrigger, clad in London brick, and a side return infill finished with black standing seam cladding. The form of the side return infill is defined with a projecting window frame on the elevation and recessed brickwork detailing on the outrigger. A new viewing gallery, accessed from the property’s main staircase, visually links those moving between floors to the garden and the newly reconfigured living areas. A large picture window provides direct sightlines from the former kitchen, now adapted as a playroom, through to the garden and into the new dining area. Generous glazing in the rear elevation comprises a sliding door and a raked toplight, allowing abundant natural light to permeate the double-height volume. Further rooflights illuminate the extended living zone, ensuring a bright, welcoming atmosphere that harmonises indoor and outdoor spaces.
