The concept is simple: a discreet wooden black box sits at the end of the garden, revealing a light, warm, and inviting space for the whole family to enjoy.

The design creates a partly sunken brick terrace with a timber pergola that grounds the room within the garden and supports the dark timber-clad and glazed façade. Inside, light birch plywood joinery wraps the space, complemented by white walls, cork panels, and an exposed timber ceiling. To maximise space on an awkward triangular site, a well-proportioned rectangular room faces the garden, while the remaining area serves as storage or a reading nook. The ceiling height is enhanced by partially sinking the floor and using a warm roof with exposed joists. A well-insulated envelope, natural ventilation, and a pergola for passive shading contribute to sustainability. Durable materials like timber, plywood, cork, and brick ensure longevity, with micro-piling foundations minimising environmental impact. Designed as a flexible retreat, the space offers a peaceful extension of the home, enhancing connections to the garden.
