Craigleith Garden Studio is a small and simple building that champions the potential of timber while avoiding the use of concrete.
Located in an Edinburgh back garden, this studio provides a sustainable space for well-being and home working. Built with locally sourced materials—including an oak frame, larch cladding, wood fibre insulation, and a sedum roof—it meets the clients’ need for a flexible space for Pilates, table tennis, social gatherings, and a home office with a small shower room. Positioned broadside to the garden, it features a sliding glass wall and tiered decking for outdoor dining and exercise. The private home office is tucked behind an external planter for a distraction-free workspace. The post-and-beam frame is expressed externally, dividing the front elevation into four bays, with variations in glazing, timber cladding, and a recessed seating area. Sprocket rafters provide summer rain protection, allowing open doors for ventilation. Collaborating with Bothanna Cabins, the structure sits on ground screws, avoiding concrete’s carbon footprint. Prefabricated panels were cost-effectively assembled on-site, while the oak frame features traditional craftsmanship, including a scarf joint with timber pegs for natural movement. Larch cladding from Tyninghame Sawmill and wood fibre insulation from Stirling reinforce the studio’s commitment to sustainability.
