Project description: Animated by light: the distinctive and deep rear extension and ground floor reworking of an existing period semi-detached private house in Southwest London.
Project citation: The reworking and extension of a traditional semi detached ground floor to reflect both the need to look after elderly relatives, from time to time and, who knows, and, the needs of a growing family. The plan is organised, in the first instance, to optimise internal placemaking by reference to the potential for access to natural light. A substantially increased footprint both enables functionally sufficient and discreet spaces to meet the needs of the whole family, but potentially creates substantial dark space. The layout resolution places pertinent use in the central spaces of the plan, whilst rearmost spaces are of wonderfully animated bright character through use of both roof forms, light, and views
