The primary driver for this project was to address the previously congested layout of the flat, and open the space up to the views of Hampstead Heath beyond.
Key structural interventions were essential in order to maximise the space available for the new kitchen and dining space, which involved removing a shower room and incorporating its window into the new social hub of the flat. The flat was thermally upgraded throughout, including additional acoustic protection in the floor and ceiling to mitigate noise transfer between flats within the building. Additionally, low energy underfloor heating was introduced to the new timber floor build-up. The wet areas of the flat were carefully considered, in order to comply with the rules set by the building management company. The renovation caters for all residents of the flat, including two miniature daschunds who make use of a dedicated shower area in the bathroom and integrated water and food bowls in the new kitchen. The delicate use of arches was introduced as a recurring theme throughout the renovation, including an arched glazed fire door, an arched connection into the utility room, and the fine detailing of the new storage cupboards within the dining space. This motif is also references in the peninsula kitchen island, which carries a curved profile to match the adjacent arched open shelving that forms a visual focal point down the main corridor of the flat.
