The concept for the project starts with a dialogue between the softened forms of the hand-crafted Victorian vernacular and a machine-crafted industrial aesthetic.

The existing building contains familiar domestic materials and textures including handmade Kent peg tiles and red/orange bricks. The new annex makes reference to the ambitious glass and steel constructs that characterised the industrial revolution, by introducing clean lines and untextured surfaces. The existing double-pitched hipped roof of the former annex has been deconstructed and replaced with a mono-pitched form. The relaxed horizontal grain of the of the existing brickwork contrasts with the high frequency vertical lines of the dark cladding system. The relationship between the host building and the annex explores the threshold between external garden space and internal living space. The placement of windows, rooflights and glazed doors seeks to increase levels of daylight in the building and blur the boundary between external and internal space. The interior design approach symbolises individuality through a series of simple joinery insertions and an expressive colour palette.
