The new house stands on a corner of a Victorian terrace in east London, once a bomb site, now part of the Carlton Square conservation area.
The internal accommodation is arranged vertically to overcome the narrow plot width - measuring only 3.5m across. A central staircase connects two storeys at the front and three at the back with a large roof light above. The spaces include a storage attic and bathroom at the top, two bedrooms at first floor, a small utility room and the main living spaces at ground level - looking out onto a front and rear garden. Storage spaces are integrated at every opportunity. Where low ceilings were necessary, these are paired with a higher zone to provide a good volume of fresh air and natural daylight. In this way, the small footprint is compensated for by diverse spaces and natural light. During the construction stage the scaffolding was wrapped in a bespoke art installation by Grace Sherrington. The project is a Tow Energy Transformation Initiative (LETT) Pioneer Project, providing feedback on the targets set out in the LFTI Climate Emergency Design Guide.
