This new dwelling replaces a derelict Atcost Barn on a former pig research unit site lying within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The planning permission allowed for a replacement building within the footprint of the existing barn with a reduced height. The design can be described as Japandi, a fusion of Japanaese and Scandinavian design.

The detailed sandblasted stained black larch is inspired by Japanese architecture as is the floating bridge over a bed of pebbles and the red trim at the front door. The floor plan is unique in that the kitchen (the hub) and plant room (the engine) form a central core within a symmetrical plan. The plan is simple creating a sequence of open flowing spaces, the grey resin seamless floor adds to the continuity of the space.

The minimalist interior and attention to detail create a feeling of simplicity. Lighting has been used to enhance spaces, from the backlit Japanese-style screens to the feature strip lights in the entrance.

The beautifully simple kitchen does not appear to be a typical cooking area and serves more as an extended living space, the mirrored panel above the base units reflects views of the surrounding countryside.

The construction is insulated concrete formwork for the walls, triple-glazed windows and a standing-seam metal roof. The air source heat pump combined with mechanical ventilation with heat recovery provides a very energy efficient comfortable dwelling.
