This simple intervention to a typical Edwardian end terrace, utilises the change in level to the garden to create a dynamic and unique space

To tackle the brief of opening up the living space and connecting the house to the garden, we firstly pulled the side brick wall of the house out to form a new boundary wall to form an extend living space. A contrasting cast concrete beam then sits on this wall and runs across the back to support the corner of the house. The remaining wall void is then filled with glass to allow the new sunken living area to run out into the garden. Whereas in the roof void, we exposed tulip wood joists to complement the original pine floorboards and provide additional warmth to the space.

Finally a glass box is inserted along the side wall of the house to mimic the level change in the house whilst allowing light to penetrate deep into the remainder of the house. Internally we introduced flexible shelving units with interchangeable cubes so the dining and lounge spaces can we interchanged according to the time of year and/or occasion.

The higher of the two units also conceal a staircase down to the concerted cellar, whilst a bi-fold ply door gives access to the rest of the house. Finally, the deep blue kitchen units provide a bold contrast to the light palette of the rest of the scheme.
