Wakefield Market Hall is a key scheme in Modus and Simon's £200 million Trinity Walk redevelopment that includes a library, public squares and public art
David Adjaye’s Wakefield Market Hall replaces a former market building on a busy corner of Union Street, opposite the town’s bus station.
Conceptually, the building consists of a covering structure of cranked glulam columns and beams, with smaller buildings housing retail units sheltered underneath. These buildings are clad in grey stained cedar with generous areas of glazing at ground floor level.
The market hall houses around 50 temporary units with nine permanent retail units fronting onto Union Street. These permanent structures shelter the edges of the open market hall, providing a sense of enclosure whilst creating a dynamic street frontage to draw in shoppers. Further external units are provided for in a refurbished public square adjacent to the building.
