Domestic sunroom extension on the side of an existing single-storey dwelling.
Our clients wanted to replace a tired and inadequate UPVC conservatory on the side of their semi-rural bungalow with a new contemporary glazed sunroom from which they could watch the wildlife in their garden and in the fields beyond. Their wish was for us to create a double-height space with an internal balcony from where they could get the best views of the countryside around them. The finished design makes a dramatic addition to the property, despite being less than 25 sq m in floor area. It is built with a slim structural steel frame clad in oak planks and cedar weatherboards, oak stairs and clear glass balustrades. The glazed facade faces south, and to prevent overheating we allowed the roof to oversail the glass for natural shading and included high-level roof glazing to allow excess heat to be exhausted by natural convection.
