A portable bar

The idea for the Architecture Bar was developed from Dress for the Weather’s Typology Project research paper – a study of building types in Glasgow. The research into evolving pub design in the city created a brief for a more temporary bar set-up that could be utilised by a number of microbrewers across Scotland. A number of ideas around the production process, beer branding and specific product display started to drive a hypothetical design.

Following discussions with the Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) the idea was developed as part of the programme for the Festival of Architecture 2016. The GIA developed the Architect IPA (a one-off brew) celebrating popular Scottish architects as a means for architectural engagement during the festival; and the bar became a vehicle for presenting and selling the IPA at a number of events during 2016.

The project consists of a series of lightweight steel frames – welded and powder coated - that are then assembled to form a versatile bar structure. Shelves and display boards are then slotted into the frame. The bar can be configured differently depending on the venue and also accommodates the key equipment/facilities in order for it to function as a traditional pub – kegs, fridges, glass hangers, shelving, till etc. It can be transported in a standard white van alongside associated equipment and required stock.

The Architect IPA brand was created by Graphical House – with the patterns incorporated into the bar.
