A timber framed pavilion, designed and built by 7-14 year-olds at National Trust property Sutton House

Building on Mary Norton’s ‘Borrowers’ theme at the Trust property, participants were encouraged to find hidden nooks and crannies around London’s oldest surviving Tudor house. These were surveyed and modelled to explore the potential for imagined inhabitation. Through a process of scaling and adaptation these moments evolved into an external installation forming a new gateway to the property used for play and performance as part of the summer 2016 events programme.

‘BUILD’ offers young people new ways to engage with designing and making. Over a week this evolves from imaginative design conception/testing to building at full scale with real materials and tools. An installation system (based on modular plywood nodes and softwood frames) was developed to allow for autonomous design and construction by participants. This method ensured a high quality, and buildable system with a significant degree of adaptability allowing the young builders to design and configuring their environment in their own way.

At the end of the week young builders showcased their work to friends, family and the wider public. The installation remained in place over the summer holidays and was used actively by visitors to the property, after which the materials we recycled and are being repurposed as an allotment greenhouse and planting beds in Manchester
The project was delivered in partnership with the National Trust and was supported by the generosity of the many contributing volunteers and material sponsors who made it all possible.
