An extension to a former Pennine Farmhouse
The brief was to open up the existing house to embrace distant views over a re-designed garden, and create a single attached garage and utility room.
The practice's solution an extensively glazed green oak framed garden room. The height restriction imposed by the row of 'weavers windows' at first floor ruled out the obvious response of a slated pitched roof steering us to a shallow pitch zinc sheeted roof.
Natural light to the inner areas of the house floods from a large rooflight over the opening between garden room and lounge. Externally the line of timber aluminium composite windows, whose proportions reflect those of the 'weavers windows' above, recede visually emphasising the alternate rhythm of the oak frame members.
The builder who single handedly carried out almost all the work contributed significantly to the finished character with outstanding craft skills, in an almost Arts and Crafts like manner.
