Single-storey extension to a family house in rural Surrey.
This extension project is located on a unique site of outstanding natural beauty in the Surrey North Downs. The design is a simple sculpted cube that was intended to sit in contrast to the existing house. The massing required careful consideration in order to be strong, balanced and not over dominating. Deep revealed picture windows are punched into the cube creating window seats allowing intimate connections to the views. The extension provides an open plan kitchen, dining and family room.
The extension is crafted from selected materials left natural and exposed giving the feeling of warmth and simplicity. The dominant material is the chalk coloured sandblasted textured brick which reflects the chalk substrate of the North Downs hills. The extension is grounded and locked in the wider landscape with a thickened external polished concrete terrace. Planters are cut into the concrete surface to act as a transition between the open landscape and the extension.
