Refurbishment of a Grade II listed farmhouse to create a modern kitchen extension linking to a dining and sitting area.
This grade 2 listed house had been heavily altered and extended in the 1970s. It also had a poor quality conservatory added in the 1980s which was too cold in winter and too hot in summer.
The house was adapted and modernised by focussing it around a contemporary ‘broken plan’ modern kitchen extension linked to a dining room and sitting area. It also reconnected the living spaces to the beautiful garden.
The new kitchen extension was conceived by taking traditional, local building materials and re-imagining them for the 21st century. It included; an open-joint stone wall to screen the new space from the road and provide a link to the garden, a reclaimed stone slate roof taken from a local building that was being demolished, English oak, lead and high performance glazing brought together in a contemporary and minimal way.
The principle element, the stone slate roof, floats above the structure and extends beyond the kitchen providing an overhang which prevents summer overheating and creates a covered outdoor sitting area.
