Rear extension on a Victorian semi-detached in East Putney
Our clients had built a glazed rear extension approximately ten years prior to our meeting, but had never been very happy with the results. Consequently they briefed us to re-think the rear ground floor of their Victorian semi-detached house in East Putney.
The clients were keen gardeners looking for a solution that would enhance their enjoyment of the garden. We opted to introduce an internal courtyard to bring natural light in to the centre of the house and to create a double aspect "green" view from the seating area.
The ceiling height of the ground floor was particularly low so we chose to lower the rear ground floor. The new extension was constructed as a steel frame with insulated block and rendered walls and a single ply-clad timber framed roof. Internal and external flooring was tiled and the kitchen was produced on a tight budget. Our clients decorated the interior themselves. The savings that were made then allowed us to stretch the budget to an elegant slender framed glazing systems.
The result is a light-filled, airy open-plan living space with double aspect views to the garden at the rear and a pretty central fern courtyard.
