Reuse of a B-listed Nissen hut on the former prisoner of war camp as a visitors' centre and events space

A unique refurbishment of a temporary, but very effective structure.

The Nissen hut is essentially a metal tent with a brick wall on either end and was designed to fit on a small truck.

Working with Comrie Development Trust and SUST (at Architecture + Design Scotland), this project converts Hut One, on a former prisoner of war camp, into a new visitors and events space.

Hut One is one of 80 huts on the camp and is a pilot project to demonstrate how natural and sustainable materials and improve energy efficiency and reduce running costs of the building.

By going back to natural products such as sheep’s wool and hemp, the refurbishment is almost going back to the roots of the building whilst updating it for flexible, visitor and events centre. we prepared the exhibition design with information on Comrie, the POW camp and on the sustainable retrofit of the building. Undertaken on a tiny budget, this retrofit is a catalyst for proposals for other huts across the Comrie camp.
