A refurbishment of a 1960s house
A series of plywood interventions amongst lovingly cluttered photographs, prints and eclectic furniture populate this reorganised 1960’s span house. A sculptural stair of lacquered ply and waxed mild steel rises as the centrepiece connecting all three levels.
Timber framed glazed panels have been introduced to the rear at ground and first floor offering widened views out to the communal garden and pond whilst maximising daylight.
A multi-purpose office / guest room to the front of the first floor is granted occasional privacy by a large sliding screen that closes against a reeded glass display wall; the glass allowing natural daylight to filter across a plywood desk.
Full height sliding doors, free of ironmongery with simple finger holes, divide the bedrooms and bathroom to the second floor and at ground floor separate the kitchen from a utility, WC and wine store.
The original garage has been absorbed into the plan allowing for a generous open kitchen consisting of two simple plywood worktops underpinned by expressed metal racking.
Open ceiling joists, exposed brickwork and services celebrate the materiality of individual elements which when brought together provide a considered and calming canvas.
